They will know we are Christians by our love

Our church had the opportunity to work on a Habitat for Humanity house this past Saturday. There were close to 70 people who came out to work, and it was a great experience seeing the body of Christ work together in this way:

The following is from the hymn, "They will know we are Christians by our love":

"We will work with each other, we will work side by side (2x). And we'll guard each one's dignity and save each one's pride. And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. They will know we are Christians by our love. By our love, by our love(2x). We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand (2x). And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land. And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. They will know we are Christians by our love"

Great topic. Do you think that the verse means that they will know we are Christians by our love... for them or for "one another"(allelon)? Thoughts?

I would say for "one another" based on what Jesus says in John 17...

Hey, Wes, I never look at this stuff, but was looking for that verse & saw your comment! I actually think it means for those outside the faith, too. Check out the latest Christianity Today article about Muslims coming to faith in Christ because of the love of Christians! Donna Harlan

The scripture means that they will see our love for each other and the world and will see the difference in our love from theirs. Jesus said you have heard love your neighbor, and love your enemy. He was saying that because the Love of God is for all men and women, and that His heart is that none would perish.

Matthew 13:44 says "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought the field." (TNIV) This verse is talking about the joy Christians have when they understand the fullness of the glory and love of God and want to seek only after him and worship Him alone. Hopefully Christians will be an example of Christ's love because of their faithfulness of following Him.
